These birds are non-migratory, year-round residents. They hibernate in small flocks with the sexes separate. Both sexes give loud alarm calls like barnyard chickens. In the winter they find shelter in wooded belts that provide feed and cover from predators (foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and others).
