Pheasants - Birds - Life Cycle

The life span of Pheasants is very short in the wild due to their popularity amongst sportsmen as game birds. Many young don't live past October. Males live about 10 months and females about 20 months. The maximum Pheasant age registered in the wild is 8 years.

From April to August hens lay 5-20 green or brown-olive eggs. Several hens may lay their eggs into one nest or even use the nests of other species. Incubation lasts 23-25 days. The young can move on their own within a few days after hatching. Hens care for the young until they are 35-40 days old. In danger, females use the crippled bird tactic to lure predators away from the nest of chicks.

Ring-necked Pheasants are non-migratory, year-round residents. In the winter Pheasants find shelter in wooded belts that provide feed and cover from predators (foxes, coyotes, bobcats, and others). Pheasants hibernate in small flocks with the sexes separate. Both sexes give loud alarm calls like barnyard chickens.

Pheasants - Birds - Diet

Pheasants are omnivorous. In the wild they feed on grains, corn, seeds, berries, fruits, vegetables, and insects (grasshoppers, crickets, larvae, and caterpillars). They will also eat mice, arthropods, mollusks, lizards, vipers, slugs, and snails. Some birds have been found choked from swallowing field mice. Pheasants feed about an hour after sunrise and in the evening.
