Pheasants - Birds - Range
Ring-necked Pheasants are abundant in North America, especially in the Eastern states and in Africa, New Zealand, Taiwan, and Europe. They prefer grain fields with shrub cover, woodlands, marsh edges with suitable dry micro sites, and open country. In America and Europe, Pheasants are bred on game farms and released for hunting. Nesting cover is the single factor that limits Pheasant population in suitable habitats. They need undisturbed erect vegetation 8-12 inches in height.

Pheasants - Birds - Description
The most common Pheasants - Ring-necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) are very colorful in order to attract females during the mating season. Pheasant males have a long, narrow, streaming, tapered tail, a rooster-like bill, and a spurred tarsus. Their head and neck are iridescent purplish green. Their cheeks are red and their breast is coppery while the back and tail are orange-brown. The entire body is speckled and barred. The white ring around the neck gives them their name. Females are brownish or gray in color for camouflage when nesting in the roost and they have a shorter pointed tail.
Pheasants rise vertically or diagonally to avoid collisions. They fly silently or produce a loud metallic sound from the wings. Flight patterns contain rapid wing beats and gliding. Pheasants may also quickly run along the ground with the tail held high.
