The male Pheasants collect harems of several hens that make nest sites in his territory. The breeding season begins in February or March and lasts until August. Males call loudly and strut before females with their ear tuft feathers raised and their red facial skin prominent. Males are highly territorial; the successful ones possess a few acres and defend it from intruders in heated battles. The Argus Pheasant has a very interesting mating ritual. The male builds a small arena of sticks and calls the female into the ring, where they dance together.
Length: Males are about 90 cm long; females are about 60 cm long (including the tail).
Wing Span: 70-90 cm.
Weight: males are 40-46 oz, females are 30-34 oz.
Flight Speed: 38-48 kmh.
Pheasants - Birds - Status
About 15 species of Pheasants are considered endangered or threatened. These species inhabit tropical forest of Sumatra, Borneo, and other islands. Besides habitat destruction, there exists a threat of Pheasants crossbreeding with domestic fowls that are often free ranging.
Ring-necked Pheasants are abundant in many areas because they are raised in farms and introduced for hunting. With few predators and an abundance of food, Pheasants may reach large numbers in a short time due to the astonishing number of offspring. In some states the Conservation Reserve Program is being held, which limits hunting and provide winter shelters for Pheasants.
