When choosing a bird breeder, don't rely on the photo galleries or pictures, but see the birds themselves.
Of the 49 pheasant species that have been identified, a few have qualities very similar to partridge or quail, but most have the following traits: a conspicuous difference in coloration between the cock and the hen; facial combs or wattles in adult cocks; and some iridescent plumage in adult cocks.

Regulations can be set to allow harvest of only the cocks, maximizing the number of hens available to breed the following year. Adult species have rather long tails. Upland-bird taxonomists have yet to determine with certainty what makes a pheasant a pheasant.
